UK journalist killed in Afghanistan

A British journalist has been killed in an explosion in southern Afghanistan.

The Ministry of Defence said Sunday Mirror defence correspondent Rupert Hamer, 39, was in a vehicle with US marines when it was hit by a bomb near Nawa in Helmand.

Mirror photographer Philip Coburn, 43, is in a serious but stable condition.

They had been in the region since New Year's Eve for a month-long assignment. Mr Hamer was on his fifth assignment in Afghanistan .

A US marine was also killed in the blast on Saturday and five others were seriously wounded.

The BBC reports Mr Hamer was the second foreign journalist to be killed in Afghanistan recently.

Michelle Lang, 34, from the Calgary Herald, was killed with four Canadian soldiers by a roadside bomb at the end of December.
