The federal government in Australia has increased its cyber security operations.
Defence Minister John Faulkner says the Defence Department investigated almost 2500 electronic attacks on its computers last year.
The ABC reports the government has responded by setting up a cyber security operations centre within its spy agency, the Defence Signals Directorate in Canberra.
Senator Faulkner says the centre will employ up to 130 cyber security experts to try to thwart attacks on Australian computer networks.
This week Google revealed the accounts of Chinese human rights activists had been hacked.
Senator Faulkner says he cannot say whether China has been attacking Australian government computers.
He said there was some evidence that electronic intrusion of Australian Government sites had been conducted from overseas. But it was "difficult, perhaps impossible", to "attribute the attacks to exact sources".
