A Chinese construction worker has been evacuated from Antarctica after being seriously injured in an accident.

The man, in his 40s, had abdominal injuries after being crushed by machinery at the base, which is not far from Australia's Davis station.

The ABC reports he was taken to a Russian base where Chinese, Russian and Australian medical staff operated for nine hours in rudimentary conditions.

He was then flown to Davis and transferred to a ski plane for a five hour flight to Casey (another Australian base) and the runway at Wilkins. After that, he was put on a 4.5 hour flight to Tasmania.

The ABC reports he is now in intensive care in Royal Hobart hospital.

China's Antarctic programme in Beijing has thanked Australian expedition members for their assistance.
