Ukraine election to go to another round

8:54 am on 18 January 2010

Exit polls suggest no candidate has won an outright victory in a presidential election in Ukraine - the first since the Orange Revolution in 2004.

The polls put opposition leader Viktor Yanukovych first and current PM Yulia Tymoshenko second.

If the results are confirmed they will face a second election on 7 February.

Current President Viktor Yushchenko has been eliminated. A total of 18 candidates took part.

Early turnout was reported to be light. Polls closed at 8pm local time (1800 GMT) on Sunday.

Mr Yanukovych's victory in the 2004 election was annulled by the Orange Revolution.

The BBC reports there is much disillusionment over links with the EU and the government's failure since 2004 to tackle corruption.
