Growing despair in Haiti

8:24 am on 19 January 2010

There are growing accounts from Haiti of violence and despair, with the capital, Port-au-Prince, falling into anarchy in the wake of last Tuesday's earthquake.

An ABC reporter says he saw a man dying in the street after crowds of other people decided he was a robber and took a brutal revenge on him. Another man was set alight and left to die.

He says people are desperate for basic supplies.

CNN also reports that looting in a commercial part of the city threatened to turn into violence, before the police took charge.

A state of emergency was declared on Sunday in response to the magnitude 7.0 earthquake on 12 January.

Also on Sunday, UN Secretary General Ban Ki-moon appealed to frustrated Haitians to be patient over efforts to bring them relief.

Mr Ban wants to send an extra 3500 peacekeepers to Haiti. he has recommended the Security Council boost the force by 1500 police and 2000 troops.

The UN already has 9000 peacekeepers in Haiti.
