A man suspected of shooting dead eight people in the United States has given himself up to the police after a manhunt in rural Virginia.
The police say seven of the bodies were found at one home. The eighth victim was found at the side of the road nearby, and died on the way to hospital.
The suspect, named as 39-year-old Christopher Speight, turned himself in after a stand-off lasting several hours in woodland outside Appomattox, about 160km southwest of Virginia's capital, Richmond.
A number of people living in the sealed-off wooded area were evacuated.
A police helicopter that responded to the incident was fired on and forced to land with a ruptured fuel tank. The officers on board were not injured.
