Protest by photographers against terror law

7:59 am on 24 January 2010

About 2000 professional and amateur photographers have staged a protest in Trafalgar Square in London against stop and search powers in Section 44 of the Terrorism Act 2000.

They say police are intimidating people with cameras in their tactics to target possible terrorists.

Last week, the European Court of Human Rights ruled that the entire law was illegal because it was indiscriminate, rather than properly targeted.

The British government is appealing, saying it is vital to make cities a hostile place for any possible attacker.

The BBC reports the demonstration follows a year of rising tensions between professional photographers and police about the exact scope of law.

Police in specifically designated areas are allowed to stop people without suspicion of wrongdoing.

According to the latest available figures, some 36,000 people were stopped between April - June last year.
