Italy targets Mafia assets

1:54 pm on 29 January 2010

Italy has launched a set of new initiatives to combat the Mafia, including a national agency in charge of assets confiscated from crime syndicates.

Prime Minister Silvio Berlusconi has presented a 10-point plan focused on efforts to seize cash, property and goods from Mafia clans.

The crime syndicates earned an estimated 78 billion euros last year.

Mr Berlusconi says his centre-right government has enjoyed unparalleled success in arresting top mafiosi and seizing their goods, pointing to one operation this week that yielded more 550 million euros of confiscated Mafia goods in a single day.
