No more student visa applications - UK govt

10:23 am on 1 February 2010

The British government has stopped accepting student visa applications from northern India, Nepal and Bangladesh because of concerns over a possible abuse of the system.

The BBC reports more than 13,000 people have applied from northern India alone in the past three months - seven times as many as the year before.

Reports suggest it's not uncommon for unscrupulous agents to offer student visas as a way of settling in Britain.

British shadow Home Secretary Chris Grayling says the system of student visas must be tightened.
