United Nations Secretary General Ban Ki-Moon has spoken at a summit meeting of the African Union against the use of rape as a weapon of war on the continent.

At the meeting in Ethiopia, Mr Ban said he would appoint a special representative to help stop sexual violence against women and children in conflict areas.

The ABC reports he said "no effort must be spared" to end this "once and for all".

Mr Brown's nominee for the role, Margot Wallstrom of Sweden, says rape is a problem that affects much of the world.
