Another boat carrying asylum seekers has been found near Christmas Island.

Federal Home Affairs Minister Brendan O'Connor says the Australian Navy boarded the boat and found 181 people and four crew aboard.

They are being taken to Christmas Island for security, health and identity checks.

The ABC reports it is the biggest group of asylum seekers to arrive by boat this year.

Opposition immigration spokesperson Scott Morrison says the government's weak border policies have created a highway on the sea.

The Immigration Department there are now 1628 asylum seekers, including 14 crew members, being held on Christmas Island. The detention centre can house 1848 people.
