Strong quake near Papua New Guinea

3:02 pm on 2 February 2010

A strong earthquake has struck off the coast of Papua New Guinea's Bougainville Island.

The 6.5 magnitude quake occurred at 8.28am on Tuesday and was centred 125km west of Arawa on Bougainville at a depth of 75km, according to the US Geological Survey.

The Paua New Guinea national disaster emergency services in the capital Port Moresby says it has not received any reports from Bougainville, Reuters reports.

Magnitude 6 quakes are capable of causing severe damage and, if shallow enough, localised tsunamis and are relatively common in Papua New Guinea.
