Missile strike by drones on border camps

9:00 am on 3 February 2010

US drones have fired 18 missiles into a sanctuary for al Qaeda and Taliban in Pakistan near the Afghan border, killing at least 10 people.

The attack was near Miran Shah, the main town in the tribal region of North Waziristan. The BBC reports the area has not seen many airstrikes in the past.

Two camps, located near each other, were hit.

The United States has stepped up drone strikes on sanctuaries on the Pakistani border since a suicide bombing in December killed seven CIA employees in eastern Afghanistan.
