The World Food Programme says more than $US230 million has been pledged for its emergency operations in Haiti, following a magnitude 7.0 earthquake there on 12 January.

The United Nations agency has thanked countries, companies and individuals for their generous and quick response.

It says the largest donors were the United States, Canada and Spain.

Donations from the private sector amounted to almost $US60 million.

Important rice donations were also received from Thailand and Malawi.
