Prison sentence for London police commander

12:08 pm on 9 February 2010

One of the most senior police officers in Britain - a Metropolitan Police Commander - has been sentenced to prison for four years for misconduct and perverting the course of justice.

Ali Dizaei had arrested a man and tried to frame him after they argued outside a London restaurant about an unpaid debt.

He said he had been stabbed -- but a jury decided he inflicted the injuries on himself.

Dizaei, 47, was convicted of both misconduct in a public office and perverting the course of justice.

Dizaei was ordered to spend two years in prison and two years on licence.

Mr Justice Simon said the sentence included a deterrent element "to send a clear message that police officers of whatever rank are not above the law."

The judge said: "You knew how the system worked and thought you would never be discovered."
