Ukraine PM to fight election result

5:04 pm on 14 February 2010

The defeated candidate in Ukraine's presidential election, Yulia Tymoshenko, says she'll challenge the result through the courts.

Miss Tymoshenko said she has evidence of widespread cheating by her opponent, Viktor Yanukovych, reports the BBC.

In a televised statement, Miss Tymoshenko said her rival and the apparent winner of the elections, Viktor Yanukovych, is not Ukraine's new president.

She called on Ukrainian people to remain defiant, but said she is not asking them to protest on the streets as she did after the 2004 presidential election.

Mr Yanukovych has called on his rival to abandon her protests and resign.

His margin of victory was only 3.48% in a poll that international monitors said was an impressive display of democracy.
