Al-Qaeda issues sports warning via website

A message said to be from an al-Qaeda commander is warning the international community not to send contestants to hockey, cricket and Commonwealth Games events in India.

The message received by the Asia Times Online warns the international community not to send people to the 2010 Hockey World Cup, the Indian Premier Cricket League and the Commonwealth Games in Delhi later this year.

The New Zealand hockey team is among 10 nations competing for the World Cup in Delhi starting in just under a fortnight.

The message from Ilyas Kashmiri, whose 313 Brigade is an operational arm of al-Qaeda, comes after the bombing of a bakery in the western Indian city of Pune.
