Australian govt considers threat to sports event

6:03 am on 18 February 2010

The Australian government says it is getting advice on a terrorist threat to international sporting events in India.

Al Qaeda has warned athletes not to attend the Hockey World Cup, the Commonwealth Games and the IPL cricket competition there.

The government is not upgrading its travel warning to India yet, but deputy prime minister Julia Gillard says it is looking carefully at the threat.

Meanwhile, Home Affairs Minister P. Chidambaram says India won't be deterred by such threats.

He said "full protection" would be provided to every player, coach and official participating in the forthcoming sports events.
