United Nations Development Programme head Helen Clark says she's optimistic that something good may come out of the devastating earthquake in Haiti.

Miss Clark visited Haiti several days after the magnitude 7.0 earthquake hit on 12 January.

On Thursday, she briefed the New Zealand Parliament's Foreign Affairs Select Committee on the agency's work.

Miss Clark said initially, getting aid in to Haiti was a nightmare but the relief effort is now functioning quite well.

The UN Development Programme already has thousands of people in job schemes and the disaster may leave a legacy of trained people and better infrastructure, she said.
