An avalanche has buried an entire village in north-west Pakistan, killing up to 19 people.

The avalanche happened at Bagaro Serai in Kohistan district about 200km north of the capital, Islamabad.

The BBC reports there has been heavy snow over the past two weeks.

Regional police chief Mohammad Ilyas says initial reports are that about 40 people have been stranded and villagers have recovered 18 or 19 bodies.

He says the death toll could rise.
