More pressure on Garrett

8:52 am on 19 February 2010

The Opposition in Australia continues to call for the resignation of federal environment minister Peter Garrett over the Government's home insulation programme.

The ABC reports concerns have emerged over subsidised solar power panels installed on thousands of roofs.

Opposition environment spokesman Greg Hunt has again called for Prime Minister Kevin Rudd to remove Mr Garrett from office.

Mr Garrett pulled out of a speech he was due to deliver at the Australian National University on Thursday and sent a bureaucrat in his place to deliver the talk. Organisers were given an hour's notice.

Opposition Leader Tony Abbott said he suspected Mr Garrett had gone into hiding.

Mr Hunt said it was time for an immediate auditor-general's inquiry into the insulation programme and again called for its suspension.
