A four centuries-old mosque minaret has collapsed in Morocco, killing at least 38 worshippers and injuring more than 70.

Hundreds of people had gathered for Friday prayers at the Berdieyinne mosque, in the old part of the city of Meknes, about 140km southwest of Rabat.

Residents say up to 80 people are trapped under the rubble and soldiers are working to reach them.

Rescuers say they cannot bring in heavy equipment because of the narrow streets.
