More asylum seekers intercepted

6:39 am on 25 February 2010

Australian authorities have intercepted another boat carrying asylum seekers off the northern coast of the continent.

It is believed 47 people were on board the boat stopped by an Australian Customs ship near Ashmore Islands on Wednesday morning.

The ABC reports the group will be transferred to Christmas Island for security, identity and health checks.

Federal Opposition customs spokesman Michael Keenan says the government has lost control of Australia's borders.

Opposition immigration spokesman Scott Morrison said on 18 February that 13 boats had arrived to date in 2010.

Wednesday's arrival is the third reported since then.
