Tongan cyclone damage even worse than thought

The number of houses known to have been destroyed or damaged by Cyclone Rene in Tonga last week continues to grow.

Tonga's disaster management office says that after assessments on the outer islands of Vava'u, 95 homes have been found to be destroyed and 370 damaged by the cyclone.

That's in addition to more than 250 houses destroyed or damaged on the islands of Tongatapu and Eua and in the Ha'apai group.

The office's deputy director, Maliu Takai, says they'll need more tents and tarpaulins, as there are not enough in Tonga. Tents were supposed to have been shipped to Eua on Wednesday, he says, but that has been delayed.
