Twenty six people have been crushed to death at a mosque in Timbuktu, Mali. Forty others were injured.
Reports say several thousand people were circling the Djinguereber mosque to celebrate the birthday of the prophet Mohammed when an elderly woman tripped, and the tragedy ensued.
The BBC reports worshippers were using a different path than usual because of renovations to the 14th-century building.
The Djinguereber mosque is the largest in Timbuktu.
