White House social secretary Desiree Rogers has resigned three months after uninvited guests gatecrashed a state dinner.

Press secretary Robert Gibbs said on Friday she was not forced out or asked to leave.

The BBC reports Ms Rogers, 50, was heavily criticised after socialites Tareq and Michaele Salahi of Virginia slipped into a state dinner for Indian Prime Minister Manmohan Singh on 24 November without formal invitations.

The Secret Service took the blame for the incident.
