Lawyers for eight men jailed for plotting to kill Fiji's interim Prime Minister, Commodore Frank Bainimarama, plan to lodge appeals against the convictions.

The group was convicted in the High Court in Suva on Wednesday, and were given prison sentences on Friday ranging from three to seven years.

Suva barrister Iqbal Khan who defending six of the accused, says all three lawyers were shocked at the length of the sentences.

He believes there are several grounds for an appeal.

The office of New Zealand Foreign Affairs Minister Murray McCully won't comment on the sentencings because the matter is heading for appeal.
