Strong quake hits northern Japan

A strong, 6.6-magnitude earthquake has hit northern Japan, but the Japanese government did not issue a tsunami warning.

The quake happened on Sunday at 5.08pm local time, off the Pacific coast of Fukushima prefecture.

Earlier on Sunday, an earthquake the U.S. Geological Survey measured at 6.4 struck in waters off Indonesia, but no damage was reported.
