Sierra Leone goldmine collapse denied

The government of Sierra Leone has denied reports of an accident at a goldmine in which 200 people.

Local officials say a trench at the mine collapsed, causing the tragedy,

but mineral resources minister Alpha Kanu says that he has visited the site in the Bo district, about 300 kilometres from the capital Freetown, and that no accident occurred.

Explaining how the reports had emerged, he says the local police superintendent might have heard it on a local radio station that had been broadcasting the story.
