Israeli soldier killed by 'friendly fire' in Gaza

9:07 am on 23 March 2010

The Israeli military says its forces opened fire on each other along the Gaza border on Monday, killing one of their own soldiers.

Three Palestinian infiltrators were captured in the incident, Reuters reports.

A military spokesperson says two separate forces had been alerted to a suspected infiltration from Hamas-ruled Gaza, but neither knew the other was in the area.

In the past week, there has been an increase of tensions along the Israel-Gaza border, with Israel launching a number of air strikes at militant targets in response to a resurgence of rocket fire from the territory.
