FARC releases soldier held for 12 years

Colombian rebels have freed a government soldier who was held hostage in the jungle for more than 12 years.

A Brazilian military helicopter operated by the Red Cross ferried Pablo Emilio Moncayo from Colombia's southern jungle to a civilian airport in the town of Florencia.

He was smiling, in uniform and looking well as his family greeted him on the airport tarmac, Reuters reports.

Mr Moncayo was a teenager when he was captured by guerrillas who overran his army communications base in 1997 and marched him into the jungle.

The BBC reports the soldier's plight came to national attention in 2007, when his father, Gustavo Moncayo, walked in chains across the country to campaign for his release.

His release is the second this week by the Revolutionary Armed Forces of Colombia; the rebel group freed another soldier on Sunday.

They want the Colombian government to exchange hundreds of jailed rebels for the 20 hostages they still hold.
