NATO says it regrets the loss of life caused when German forces mistakenly killed five Afghan soldiers during a battle with Taliban fighters.
A statement from the military alliance says the Germans opened fire when two civilian cars the soldiers were travelling in drove towards them and ignored instructions to stop.
Earlier, three German soldiers were killed in an attack by the Taliban in Kunduz province.
