The Dutch navy has freed a German cargo ship attacked off the coast of Somalia and arrested 10 pirates after a gunfight.

The Dutch defence ministry says the frigate Tromp rescued the ship and its crew about 900km east of the Somali coast on Monday.

A Dutch soldier was slightly wounded in a gunfight with the pirates who had come aboard from a mothership accompanied two attack boats.

The Defence Ministry says the frigate received a distress signal from the German container ship Taipan about four hours earlier.
