Rescue teams in Rio de Janeiro say they have recovered 20 bodies from the scene of a massive landslide, where as many as 200 people are believed to be buried under mud and rubble.

The BBC reports that the latest landslide sent mud crashing into the shantytown of Morro do Bumba, sweeping away at least 50 homes. A children's nursery is among the buried buildings.

Morro do Bumba was built on top of a disused landfill, and the 300 rescue workers on the site are having to conduct their search with great caution.

With only 25 people reported to have been rescued alive, hopes are fading of finding more survivors.

Apart from those believed to be buried, officials say that at least 195 people have been killed across the state of Rio de Janeiro since Monday, when the heaviest rain for 48 years unleashed floods and mudslides.
