Warning of overcrowding in detention centre

11:55 am on 12 April 2010

The Federal Opposition in Australia says overcrowding at the Christmas Island detention centre is becoming a serious issue.

A further two boatloads of asylum seekers were intercepted off northern Australia on Sunday.

The latest boats arrived just days after the Australian government announced refugees from Sri Lanka and Afghanistan will have to wait up to six months to have their claims processed, the ABC reports.

Opposition immigration spokesman Scott Morrison says an escalation in tensions is inevitable at the detention centre on the Indian Ocean island.
