Chinese President Hu Jintao has visited survivors of last Wednesday's earthquake in Jiegu, on the remote Tibetan plateau.

The official death toll from the quake earthquake in north-west China has risen to 1,706 and 256 missing, the official Xinhua news agency said.

A few people are being found alive, including a 68-year-old man trapped beneath the rubble reports the BBC.

Officials say people now have basic shelter, food and water, but it is not easy to get supplies to the quake-zone 4,000m above sea-level.

About 700 people who died in the quake have been cremated outside the worst-hit town, Jiegu.

The authorities have decided to cremate victims because of fears that disease may spread rapidly.
