Vandals in Brazil have covered the Christ the Redeemer statue above Rio de Janeiro with spray-painted graffiti.
They used scaffolding that had been erected to carry out maintenance work on the 40-metre high statue.
Rio's mayor describes the vandalism as a crime against the nation.
