Structural engineers are assessing up to 80 buildings damaged by an earthquake in the West Australian goldfields city of Kalgoorlie-Boulder.

The 5.0-magnitude quake struck on Tuesday morning, injuring two people and damaging dozens of buildings in historic Boulder.

Kalgoorlie Mayor Ron Yuryevich says additional engineers have been flown in to help assess the damage, the ABC reports.

Mr Yuryevich says there are fears some buildings will have to be torn down.

The Fire and Emergency Services Authority (FESA) is working with the State Government to determine how much assistance is needed for affected residents.

Parents of students at Boulder Primary School were asked to keep their children at home on Wednesday.
