Everest climbers to go above 8,000m in clean-up push

Twenty Nepalese climbers are setting off for Mount Everest this week to try to remove decades of rubbish in the world's highest clean-up operation.

Many foreign and Nepalese climbers have cleaned Mt Everest in the past, but Namgyal Sherpa, leader of the Extreme Everest Expedition 2010, said no one had dared to clean above 8,000 metres.

The team will pick up empty oxygen bottles, gas canisters, torn tents, ropes and utensils.

It hopes to bring down at least 2,000 kilograms of rubbish, along with the body of a climber killed two years ago.
