Water cannons used against smelly dumps

7:55 am on 24 April 2010

Water-cannons filled with liquid deodorant have been deployed in parts of Beijing to blast away the stench of rotting rubbish.

The arrival of warmer weather in the Chinese capital has caused garbage in landfills to rot, leading to a nasty stench in parts of the city.

In one suburb, 100 high-pressure hoses were filled with liquid deodorant to try to kill the odour.

But the tactic appears to be having mixed results. Some residents say the smell is still so bad they are waking up coughing in the night.

However, the BBC reports gases are to be extracted from the rubbish at the Gao'antun garbage landfill plant and used to generate electricity.
