India accuses diplomat of spying for Pakistan

8:22 am on 28 April 2010

India has arrested a woman working as a diplomat in its Islamabad embassy on charges of spying for Pakistan.

Madhuri Gupta, 53, a second secretary in the Indian embassy in Islamabad, is suspected of handing over classified documents to the Pakistani intelligence service, the BBC reports.

Officials say she was arrested in Delhi after a long period of surveillance and that she might not have been working on her own.

There was no immediate response from Pakistan. The neighbours have a history of mistrust and have fought three wars.
