British PM apologises for 'bigoted woman' gaffe

7:57 am on 29 April 2010

British prime minister Gordon Brown has apologised to a woman voter he was caught on microphone describing as "bigoted", during his campaigning for next week's general election.

Gillian Duffy, 65, had challenged him on issues including immigration.

As Mr Brown got into his car, he was still wearing a broadcast microphone and was heard to say "that was a disaster" and that the pensioner was a "bigoted woman".

Mr Brown visited the woman at her home and said afterwards there had been a misunderstanding and that she had accepted his apology.
