A woman described by British Prime Minister Gordon Brown, as a bigot says she is sorry for him.

Gillian Duffy, 66, a widow, has told the Mail on Sunday that she was shocked by Mr Brown's comment, but she was more sad than angry.

She told the paper that while she was longtime supporter of the Labour Party, she would not vote for any party in this election.

Mr Brown described Mrs Duffy as a bigoted woman in a conversation with an aide in his car, while he was campaigning in Rochdale, in northwest England, on Wednesday.

He was wearing a microphone, which was still on when he made the comment.

The election is on 6 May.
