British PM heralds 'seismic shift' in UK politics

Britain's Conservative Prime Minister, David Cameron, and his Liberal Democrat deputy, Nick Clegg, are promising a new era in politics as the country's first coalition government in 65 years begins work.

At a joint media conference in the garden of 10 Downing Street, the Prime Minister said the Conservative-led coalition government could mark a "historic and seismic shift" in British politics, the BBC reports.

David Cameron said the government would be strong enough to survive a full five-year term. Their agenda was to cut the deficit, support troops, clean up politics and build a "stronger society".

Mr Clegg said while there may be bumps and scrapes along the way, the new government will last because its members are united by a common purpose, with a bold and reforming agenda.

The Conservatives and minority Liberal Democrats agreed on Wednesday to form a coalition after an inconclusive election last Thursday ended 13 years of rule by the Labour Party.
