Thai forces to seal off protest area

Security forces in Thailand say they will seal off an area where anti-government protesters are encamped in the capital Bangkok.

The protesters were given an ultimatum to leave the camp, which stretches from the city's shopping hub south to the business district, but the deadline has passed.

Protesters have built large barricades from tyres and bamboo, behind which they have stockpiled food supplies and generators.

Security forces say they plan to increase the pressure on the protesters and will keep the public informed of measures being taken, the BBC reports.

A military spokesperson says routes into the sprawling encampment would be closed on Thursday from 6pm local time. Protesters would be free to leave, but not to enter.

Businesses nearby have been told to close and be prepared to stay closed.

Armoured vehicles will be moved into strategic positions to block off roads and provide protection for troops already in the area.

The move comes a day after the government announced and then cancelled a plan to cut off water and power supplies to the protesters.

The group has been occupying key parts of the capital since 14 March. They want Prime Minister Abhisit Vejjajiva to dissolve parliament and call fresh elections.

He had offered polls on 14 November - but the two sides failed to agree a deal because of divisions over who should be held accountable for a deadly crackdown on protests in April.
