Teenage round-the-world sailor back on dry land

Thousands of people have welcomed home teenage Australian sailor Jessica Watson after her seven-month solo round-the-world voyage.

Watson, who is two days short of her 17th birthday, sailed into Sydney Harbour on Saturday afternoon.

The 16-year-old Queenslander has become the youngest person to circumnavigate the globe solo, nonstop and unassisted.

However, it is unlikely she will hold the record, after the World Speed Sailing Racing Council said she had not sailed far enough north of the equator, the ABC reports.

Customs officials will inspect her boat and stamp her passport before she is escorted along a pink carpet to a stage near the Sydney Opera House where she will be met by Prime Minister Kevin Rudd and New South Wales Premier Kristina Keneally.
