More flights grounded by ash

Volcanic ash from Iceland has grounded 1000 flights and delayed hundreds of thousands of passengers in parts of northern Europe.

Several of Europe's busiest airports, including Heathrow in London and Schiphol in Amsterdam, were closed for several hours on Monday due to fears the ash could damage jet engines.

The Met Office in Britain said southwesterly winds should push the cloud away from British and northern European airspace on Monday and Tuesday.

The volcano under the Eyjafjallajokull glacier has been erupting since April with no sign of the activity about to end.

Ash from the volcano has already caused considerable disruption over Europe, forcing airlines to cancel about 100,000 flights and stranding millions of passengers.

The International Air Transport Association says airlines have lost about $US1.7 billion since April.
