US govt threatens to push BP aside over oil spill

3:24 pm on 24 May 2010

The United States government says it will push BP out of the way if the company cannot solve the problem of a big oil leak in the Gulf of Mexico.

Interior Secretary Ken Salazar said on Sunday he is angry and frustrated that BP has missed "deadline after deadline" in its efforts to seal the leak.

Mr Salazar is due to visit the disaster site on Monday.

The leak began after a deep-water drilling rig exploded on 20 April, killing 11 people. It sank two days later.

However, Mr Salazar added that there was "no question" that BP was doing its utmost to resolve the situation

The BBC reports that only the oil companies have the expertise to deal with the situation.

Oil from the spill has reached Louisiana and is threatening Florida and Cuba.
