40 die in Kandahar wedding bombing

10:44 pm on 10 June 2010

At least 40 people have been killed and 73 wounded in an apparent suicide bombing at a wedding in the southern province of Kandahar in Afghanistan.

It's reported many of the guests had links to local police or an anti-Taliban militia and that is why they were targeted.

The Taliban, however, have denied any involvement in the attack, the BBC says.

Last week, Afghanistan held a national peace jirga, or gathering, which endorsed a plan to seek peace with the Taliban but violence has continued unabated.

The explosion was reported to have taken place in an area reserved for men but children are among the casualties.
