Pope Benedict XVI has begged for forgiveness of the sexual abuse of children by some Catholic priests.
At a mass in the Vatican marking the end of the Year for Priests, the Pope pledged to do everything possible to stop such abuse happening again.
The ABC reports it was Benedict's clearest apology to date over the paedophile priest scandals coupled with accusations, since late last year, of high-level cover-ups by the Church worldwide.
